Visit: Capoeira Lebanon

Sobreviventes literally means "survivors" and our instructor gave the school its name after the 34-day war with Israel in the summer of 2006. The name was inspire by the fact that a core group of its founding members continued to train Capoeira during the war.

Capoeira Sobreviventes was formed in May of 2006 as a result of there being no existing cultural center for training the African Brazilian art form, despite the fact that there are thousands of Brazilian-Lebanese living in Lebanon today (and millions of Lebanese living in Brazil!).

Volta ao Mundo objectives – what are the guests sponsoring:

You are essentially helping us provide Capoeira and music classes to disadvantaged /underprivileged youth in marginalized communities.
Contributions will help finance our programs and recruit full timers for regular handling of different groups.

Our target groups are:

Youth affected by sociopolitical turmoil (trauma groups)
At-risk youth (drugs, violence, depression, school dropouts)
Students in public school
Youth in isolated/marginalized villages of Lebanon
Physically/mentally handicapped

How will our outreach activities help these youth?

Empowerment: Capoeira has proven to help the youth build self-confidence, self-respect, and personal growth.
Peace Building: by channeling their energy and learning how to use their skills, Capoeira helps youth from engaging in violent activities and steering away from drugs.
Discipline: Capoeira engages people towards establishing personal goals and requires a commitment and responsibility towards improving lives; it encourages youth to focus more on staying in school, thus preparing them for the job market.
Dialogue, tolerance, and self-respect: Capoeira challenges to understand and respect each others differences and short comings and pushes us to excel and meet our goals. It is an art form developed from different cultural contexts, and it opens up dialogue and self-reflection thus allowing for integration.
